We caught the train to Edinburgh, then it was a trip across the city to the airport, and a flight via Wick to Sumburgh. As we got further north, we began to see snow, and the day was cold, bright, with no wind. I got some excellent photos of the Orkneys and Fair Isle as we flew over them, and Bolts car hire were waiting to meet us when we landed. We spent the afternoon in Lerwick and one of the highlights for me was visiting the Coop, where I met Jenny, who phones in her bread shortages and damages to us at work. After booking a ferry for the next day and doing some shopping, we headed for Muckle Roe and Elsie and Ivor's bed and breakfast, where we were to spend the next four nights. In the evening, we went to Brae for a meal at the Mid Brae Inn.
The most noticeable change from being that far north was the amazingly long twilights. Overall, it gets darker in Shetland earlier than here, but it's a very gradual process. As the picture of me by Lerwick Harbour shows, the light is already fading quite a lot and it's only around 3.30 (in mid February).
