Shetland February 06 - Monday

On Monday, our last full day, we drove to North Roe and then set off to walk to the most northerly tip of the west side of the mainland, Point of Fethaland. We hadn't explored this part last October and discovered some stunning scenery, albeit at the end of another long, reasonably tough and hilly walk. The sheer cliffs with fulmars circling round were worth the effort however, likewise the little bay with ruins of a small settlement where people lived and fished not so very long ago. Ivor had shown us a photo taken when the place was inhabited, and it looked no different now apart from the houses having lost their roofs and some of the fishing equipment no longer being there.

On the way back we called in at a cafe in Eshaness and had another look at Dore Holm, very familiar from hundreds of postcards, usually showing a full moon shining through the "neck" of the "horse drinking". I don't know what time of year these photographs were taken, certainly not in February as that view is almost due south and not the direction from which the moon rises! Our last day was not very notable, consisting mainly of driving the hire car back to Sumburgh and getting home, but I did take a picture (the last one on this page) of a typical Shetland house.
